How to repair or replace the turbine on a Hoover Steamvac Model F7431

Always be sure your machine is unplugged from the electrical outlet before proceeding!

Although this repair is shown with a Hoover Steamvac Model F7431-900, the procedure will be very similar for all Hoover Steamvac Series Models F72xx-xxx and F74xx-xxx and can be used as a guide.  The turbine is the air powered part that turns the 5 or 6 brush unit. It is very common that the turbine gets damp and the bearings / bushings freeze up. To verify that your turbine has seized up; remove both the clean water tank and the dirty water tank, remove the brush unit from the bottom of the machine. Turn you Steamvac on its’ side on a workbench. Refer to the picture below. Using a large flat blade screwdriver; place the tip of the screwdriver into the square white hole of the turbine and try to spin it. It should spin freely, if it is very difficult or impossible to turn then repair/replacement is needed.Hoover Steamvac model F7431 Turbine Post

Now you can disassemble the turbine to see if it is salvageable or if it needs to be replaced.  First, turn it over and remove the 4 screws from the  bottom gear assembly cover as shown. Leave the cover on for now.

Turn the turbine right side up and lift up the 3 tabs that secure the bottom and top halves together.

Now, turn the turbine over and remove the bottom gear cover as shown.  Check the large plastic gear for broken / worn teeth. The cover can be washed without doing damage. If any gear teeth are broken, the gear and therefore the whole turbine is useless. Replace the turbine.

Check the other gear for broken teeth. See the picture below. Check the ball bearing that you can see(shown by the arrow). It is most likely very rusty, but you may be able to save it. Remove the bearing seal and spray it with WD40 to see if it loosens up. If it does loosen up and spins freely and you’re confident that both gears will spin, blot out as much of the WD40 as you can with a paper towel and put a couple dabs of white lithium grease into the bearing and replace the bearing seal. Reinstall the turbine and test your machine.  Otherwise, just go ahead and install a new turbine.

From our repair bench- another Bissell Proheat Carpet Cleaner

Yet another clogged heater on a Bissell Proheat carpet cleaner. This one was a model 1697. Customer stated that it just was not pumping water from either the upholstery hose or the floor nozzle. Sine more than 90% of these machines end up having a clogged heater the first thing we checked was the heater which in this model is located in the handle section. Sure enough the inside of the heater was blocked with hardened sediment. Cleaned out all the sediment and used a paper clip to clean out the nipples where the plastic tubing is a ttached and also blew out all the tubing which was also clogged with sediment. Put the cover back on the heater and tested. Seems the heater gaskets had deteriorated enough so that now the heater leaks. Customer did not want to pay for a new heater so we just took the tubing off the heater and fitted them together with a plastic connector and bypassed the heater altogether. Put a new pump belt on and tested — now works fine.

Eureka Central Vac Powerhead

Eureka powerhead for central vac. At the powerhead end of the hose is a plastic handle. Inside this handle is the end of the hose with connections for the wires that turn on the central vac and powerhead brush. The connections are made via 4 metal rings that slip over the 4 wires, each ring separated with a plastic ring. The end ring (nearest the end of the hose) will slide off of the wire with the slightest jar. How do I “fix” this ring inplace, but not permanently (glue) incase future repair is needed? Thanks.

Hoover Windtunnel Vacuum Model U6632-900

I need some detailed info about the suction valve of Hoover Wind Tunnel Model # U6632-900. Mine apparently won’t open to allow suction when vacuuming floors. The valve will open and close if I push it from the valve or the “lever” that controls it and nothing appears to be stuck in there that I can see. I ordered new belts and the brush assembly but am not sure if i need to explore further.
