Most Bissell Proheat Carpet Cleaners have a small pump located in the front of the machine underneath the nozzle and a rectangular heater located inside the handle assembly. The most common cause we have found of them not spraying solution is due to the heater being plugged, followed by a broken or stretched pump belt and finally a defective pump.
Since changing the belt is the easiest fix, we suggest you check that first. (Before attempting any repair be sure your machine is unplugged from the electrical outlet). Most Proheat models have two belts; a cogged belt that turns the brush roll, and a flat belt that turns the pump. If the pump belt is stretched or broken it needs to be replaced. The pump and belts are located in the front of the machine on the operator’s left. Turn the machine over and you’ll see a red retainer with 2 screws. Remove the retainer to gain access to the pump and belts. While you’re there check the red pump pulley, it’s where the two belts are. If that pulley is broken or loose you’ll have to replace the whole pump, the pulley is not available separate.
If the belts and pump pulley are OK check the heater next. The heater is rectangular and made of metal. It is located in the handle section. You’ll need to remove the screws from the back of the handle to gain access. (CAUTION: these heaters retain heat for a long time, make sure your machine has been off for at least 60 minutes before touching it!) Remove the tubing from the heater and also the heater cover. You’ll probably see sediment inside. Clean out any sediment you see and use a paper clip on the nipple connectors where the clear plastic tubing was attached to ensure they are not clogged. After reassembly, running some white vinegar through your machine may help to clean out any unflushed sediment.
If neither of the above solved your problem then the pump itself may be bad. You can usually get a new pump from your local Vac repair shop. We also have them available on our website at www.VacuumCleanerShop.com

I have a Bissell carpet shampooer. When I put the resevoir (containing hot water) on the shampooer, it will not spray out. It just pours out. What is wrong?
Question: I have a Bissle 9200-2 pro heat carpet cleaner and it wont spray water or soap, I have it apart and the pump seems good but there is an electric switch that directs flow from floor to hose, is it likely to be that.
Hi my proheat bissell 7901 stopped pumping water to the floor, but it pumps water from the hand hose. I read the manual and followed how to check belt and the flat belt on right side of shampooer is fine and I turned on and it turns and so do the brushes at the bottom of the machine. I was reading online and I guess there’s two belts on this machine? where can I find the other belt to see if it needs replacing. I guess it’s a ribbed belt? that is the water pump belt?
To Laura: The ribbed belt is the one that turns the brushes. If your brushes are turning then the belt is fine. However if you want to look at it. There are two screws on the bottom near the brush head (back a few inches from each end of the brush) that can be remove to pull the brush assembly out. You really shouldn’t need to do this unless the brush is not rotating.
had to replace the pump, but now I can’t the mixture right. It will spry soap but not water. I don’t know how to correct this.I guess I have something on wrong for the mixture but I can’t figure out what.
Machine will not spray soap from brush head or cleaning attachment. Sprays only water.
machine will have sucktion with attachment but no water or soap goes on floor i cant figure it out the belts are fine what else could it be?
I had the problem of water/soap not spraying out. The issue in my case was two fold:
1. You need to give the vacuum some time after turning it on before pulling the spray trigger. When you turn the vacuum on, the pump initially needs to get a good “prime” and work any air out.
2. Gaskets: On the bottom of the fill container is a red gasket. For me, that gasket was not on correctly, and thus I wasn’t getting a good seal.
If you do take yours apart, be carefult to (a) take note of where all the hoses go before removing them, and (b) be aware that if you may dislodge some air gaskets that can cause a loss of air suction. The gasket can be easily reseated from the underneath panel.

One last and very important thing to check (after you clear out the tube’s) the HEATER itself. In my case the heater inlet and outlet were CLOOOOOOOOOOOOGED. Cleaned it out, put it back together, and…………. it worked……….. Thanks for a starting point………………
