This procedure will work on almost all Eureka and Sanitaire upright vacuums with a plastic fan located on the underside of the machine as shown:
Always make sure your vacuum is unplugged from the electrical outlet before proceeding!
- Turn the vacuum upside down resting on the handle with base of the machine resting on a work bench.
- Remove the bottom plate, belt and brush roll.
- Models with plastic hoods usually have a phillips screw on the left and right side that secure the hood to the base. Models with metal hoods usually have a spring on the left and right side. Remove the screws or springs.
- Place the vacuum right side up on the bench. Using a torx bit, remove the screw from the round, black height adjuster knob in the front of the hood and remove the adjuster knob.
- Pick the hood up and set it aside as much as possible. (You don’t need to remove any wires)
- Remove the 4 torx screws from the motor base.
- Turn the motor assembly over and loosen and remove the hexagonal belt pulley from the fan. (Save the fiber washer that is between the pulley and the top of the fan unless you have a new one.)
- Pry what’s left of the fan up off the motor shaft. (It’s usually easier to use two flat blade screwdrivers, one on either side of the fan and pry up with equal force on each)
- Keep the spacers/washers under the fan in place.
- Brush away or vacuum up any dirt and debris collected on the base – just don’t suck up the washers/spacers.
- Replace with new fan making sure all washers and spacers are in the right place.
- Snug the fan pulley down. Don’t over tighten, it will tighten itself as it spins.
- Spin the fan by hand before applying power.
- Reinstall motor assembly, hood, brush, belt (now’s a good time to replace the belt) and bottom plate.
Fan’s should be available from your local vac shop, online or from our website at http://vacuumcleanershop.com/Eureka-Fans.htm
