How to Disassemble an Electrolux canister vacuum cleaner

This procedure works on almost all Electrolux plastic body canister vacuums. Caution: Always be sure that your machine is unplugged from the electrical outlet before servicing.
Remove the hose from the front cover and pull the electric cord out 2 or 3 feet. Remove the paper bag. Place the vacuum upside down on a work bench with some kind of pad underneath. Open the bag door and pull the end of the soft plastic rail cover out slightly (on both sides) to expose the rigid plastic side rails underneath. If you look directly at the side rails from the front you will see that the ‘T’ shaped part of each rail slides into a channel that locks the top and bottom halves of the machine together. The rails have notches or barbs on the last half inch or so which keep the rails from sliding out. You will need to get these notches away from the channel by sliding a narrow flat blade screw driver in between the top of the ‘T’ and the channel. Just tap it in and leave it there while you pull the rails out with a pair of needle nose pliers. Next, take a look at the bag door hinges. They have a square hole in the center through which a small tab from the bag compartment pokes through. Take a larger flat blade screwdriver and carefully pry the edge of the hinge away from the tab. This will release the bottom section (which is really on top now of course).
Instructions Continue Below.

If you remembered to pull out the two or three feet of cord before you started then you should now have enough slack so that you can lay the bottom section aside.
If you plan to do any electrical work be sure to mark the locations of the wire connections. Electrolux Service Centers are the only source of wiring diagrams and they don’t  like to share.

This was very helpful. Thanks. Do you have a similar instruction set for bagless model also?

After somewhat of a struggle I was able to take apart and put back together my canister vacuum. The retractible cord device didn’t function correctly, so by taking the machine apart I was able to get it to function again properly. I would never have been able to solve how to take the canister apart without your information. Thank you for your information and guidance.

  • My wife had to have an electrolux because she had one for over 20 years. She bought a new plastic one (LUX 9000) with a hepa filter.

When you use the vacuum it gets really hot! When I use it I remove the hepa and it runs well. She would always get mad at me so I left the stupid thing on (hepa), matter of fact I had to tape it on because the little plastic ears break when it is bumped. The plastic clip that holds the power head togather at the elbow fell out and so that came apart. I had to jimmy a piece in there to hold it togather.

So now a Electrolux guy calls and wants to look it over. He came and said that for almost $300 he woul clean the motor and replace the brush and elbow on the power head.
I took it to a local vac guy and he said the motor was wasted because the hepafilter made it run too hot.

I thought from the begining that it was just a plasic piece of junk. Not the thing she had before. I would never buy one. The vac man said it would cost more to fix than buying a new one.

I haven’t checked into that yet but my wife is livid.

By following the instructions closely I was able
to disassemble and repair my cord retractor.
I would not have been able to disassemble without
    instructions.
    Thankyou.

I have an Electrolux Renaissance cannister vacuum. Suddenly the rooter or the brush portion stopped turning. I changed the bag, filter, took out a mass of stuff but the shut down light that goes on when the bag is full or blocked will not go off and neither will the brush turn. I have tried getting into the base of head of the vacuum but it seems like there must be another mechanism to unlock the whole. Perhaps it is belt that broke but I don’t think so. Is there a way of rebooting the system so the bag light goes off and the brush will do it thing.

I would so appreciate anyone who takes the time to help me. It is 2/1/09 and my apt needs a good clean.

Thank you and crossing my fingers.

Our electroluxoxygen ultra just ate a small block of wood which lodged in the power wand inside the handle. My question is simple. how do I disassemble the handle to get the wood out? It is jammed far enough in that I cannot haul it out the way it went in. Thanks for your help,

I have a 30 year old Electrolux which still runs fine — but the cord retractor does not work.

    1) Would the instructions on dissemblying (above) work for this machine?

    2) How do I repair the retractor?

hi is there a wiring diagram for the switch on an electrolux model g??

  • Bill

Your instructions were great without them would have given up and taken the vac to the shop. It was alittle difficult getting it apart so I could repair the switch. Had to purchase the rocker bracket ($7.00)at a local store. re assembling was alot easier then taking it apart.

    Many Thanks

    Bill

I need to replace the power cord on my 30 year old Electrolux canister vacuum which still runs fine. I have everything figured out except for how to correctly reassembly the cord retractor which has me stumped.

    1) Do you instructions and/or diagrams for reassembling the cord retractor?

    Thanks,

  • Pissed

Thank you! Those barbs were holding me up for a while, I was going nuts trying to figure it out! I would have gotten in apart, but done a lot of damage w/o your help.

I purchased a new rocker to replace the broken one in the power switch but I can’t figure out how to install the part into the switch mechanism. Any ideas?

  • Tom Gibbons

Hi, I have the Diplomat cannister model. The problem right now is replacing the switch/cash outlay is the primary factor, getting bit in the a– by the ignorance is bliss devil,eg. eg. eg. SOOOO, how much $ is fair market?,,,WARNING TO ANYONE who needs a new hose for this model, the prongs will not line up when you push in to make the switched handle connection to the powerhead tube, it took me only 1hr. to figure this out. you must push the plug part towards the tube and push into the tube at the same time. it will prabably be a bit tight, but wear in down the road. Oh, and waiting for this part to be delivered only took 1mo. First time we received the wrong hose, so cover all your bases and ask all the questions of the 3rd party dealer. Good luck, if anyone can help me with this switch problem,GBY. Regards, Tom.
