This procedure will work on just about any Hoover Steam Vac F5xxx or F6xxx series models with a SINGLE valve in the bottom of the Clean Water Tank. The only tool you will need is a pair of needle nose pliers to remove what’s left (if anything) of the old valve stem assembly. The valve stem assembly can be purchased from any full service retail vacuum store, or you can search the web. We also have them available at our web site at http://vacuumcleanershop.com/Hoover_shampooer_parts.htm The valve stem assembly comes with 3 pieces; a stem, a gasket and a spring. Older assemblies also included a brass washer which is no longer available and is not necessary.
To prepare to install the assembly back into the tank; push the rubber gasket down over the top of the valve stem until it rests in the groove close to the bottom. The spring goes on top of the gasket. Push the assembly straight into the bottom of the tank until the gasket is just inside the tank. The valve stem should poke through the hole of the frame that is above it inside the tank. The spring applies just enough pressure back down on the gasket to close up the hole in the bottom of the tank. Take the tank to the sink and pour about a cupful of water in to make sure there are no leaks. Then push in on the valve assembly slightly with your finger and water should flow out. Now, get your carpets clean.
